A healthy lifestyle is becoming increasingly popular, including a healthy diet or diet. One of the rows of diets that are trending lately is the raw food diet. Before you practice this type of diet, let’s get acquainted with the raw food diet.

As the name implies, a raw food diet is a diet in which people who consume it only consume raw foods, or foods that go through a little processing process. The recommended cooking temperature limit in this diet is between 40 – 48 degrees Celsius.

In addition, food should not be processed in any way, such as pasteurized (disinfected with high temperature heating) or sprayed with pesticides.

This raw food diet theory assumes that the cooking process can destroy nutrients in food, so it is better to eat fresh food. This raw food diet is believed to be healthy for digestion, so that food can be more easily absorbed by the body, and help reduce the risk of certain diseases.

What are the Benefits of a Raw Food Diet?

The effectiveness of this diet is actually still under study. However, there are several benefits offered or claimed by the raw food diet, namely:

  • Reduces the risk of heart disease. Because this diet involves the consumption of fruits and vegetables, it is considered to help reduce blood pressure and maintain heart health. But the certainty of the benefits of this raw food diet still needs to be studied further.
  • Lowers bad cholesterol, due to the reduction of saturated fat consumption.
  • Lower body mass index, which also means overcoming excess weight. This is because the food consumed in the raw food diet tends to be low in calories.
  • Makes skin look fresher.
  • Healthy digestion, because the food organized in this diet is rich in fiber.
  • Increases the body’s metabolism.

What can you eat, what should be in the list

Below are some types of foods that can be included as a daily menu in the raw food diet:

  • All fruits and vegetables are fresh, or dried.
  • Nuts, wheat, and grains that are raw or soaked in water.
  • Fresh juice without added sugar.
  • Virgin coconut water or mineral water.
  • Fermented foods, such as kimchi or sauerkraut.
  • Eggs and raw milk preparations, such as yogurt.
  • Vegetable milk such as peanut milk or wheat milk.
  • Dried meat.
  • Organic foods that have not undergone processing, or processed using a temperature of no more than 48 degrees Celsius.
  • Seafood includes raw seafood (e.g. sushi or sashimi) and seaweed.
  • Chocolate made from cocoa or chocolate seeds that do not go through the burning process.

The benefits offered by this raw food diet may make you interested in trying it. But, do not rush. Note and remember well, some of these foods may not be safe to consume in their raw state as they may contain germs or toxins.

Foods that are not recommended for consumption raw or unprocessed are red beans, cassava, mushrooms, peas, capers, eggs, meat, and milk. High quality fresh fish can still be consumed, for example as a sashimi or sushi dish. But, to be safer, it is best to add wasabi to eradicate the bacteria in it.

Another risk that also needs to be considered during this diet is a lack of nutrition. Intake of iron, omega-3, protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, and selenium may be less because the type of food consumed in this diet is very limited.

Remember, not all foods are suitable as a raw food diet menu. It is best to practice food before consumption to be free from bacterial contamination. However, still use a healthy method of processing, such as boiling or grilling. If you have a specific health condition, it is advisable to consult a doctor first before trying a raw food diet.
