Oregano is known as a food flavoring ingredient. Although not only that, there are various benefits of oregano that are dear to miss. Oregano is believed to be able to cope with a variety of complaints ranging from relieving the flu and whooping cough, to fighting free radicals that cause a variety of chronic diseases.

The benefits of oregano for health can be obtained thanks to the content of a number of nutrients in it. Although barely calorie-rich, oregano is rich in vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium which are very good for the body.

Benefit of Oregano

  • Relieves flu and cough

Although further research is needed, oregano is believed to help relieve flu and cough. To get this benefit, you can drip oregano oil or add enough dried oregano into warm water. Inhale the steam or use this mixed water for bathing.

  • Lowers bad cholesterol levels

Clinical studies show that consuming oregano after meals, for 3 months, can help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and increase good cholesterol (HDL) levels in people with high cholesterol.

In this study, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood were not affected. Even so, lowering LDL and increasing HDL can still have a beneficial effect on heart health.

  • Helps fight the bacteria that cause infections

Oregano contains compounds that can fight bacteria. Studies show that oregano essential oil can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, which can cause infections. However, these benefits still need to be studied further.

  • Kills parasites in the intestine

Although further study is needed, research shows that consumption of oregano oil for 6 weeks can help reduce parasites in the gut, such as Blastocystis hominis, which can cause diarrhea.

  • Repel free radicals

In addition to being rich in vitamins and minerals, oregano essential oil is also rich in antioxidants that are beneficial in fighting free radicals that cause oxidative damage to body tissues. By consuming foods high in antioxidants, the body will not be susceptible to chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.

  • Helps heal surgical wounds

A study proved that ointments containing oregano extract are more effective in healing surgical wounds than petroleum jelly. However, again, the effectiveness of oregano in this case still needs to be further investigated.

To get the benefits of oregano from numbers 2 to 5, you can mix oregano oil, oregano powder, or dried oregano leaves into a dish or food. While to heal wounds, you can use oregano oil as an ointment.

Oregano Side Effects

Oregano or oregano oil is generally safe to consume in food. However, there are some side effects that need to be aware of its use, namely:

For those who are allergic to mint leaves, allergic reactions may also appear after consuming oregano. The reason is that this one herbal plant still belongs to the mint leaf family.

Stomach feels uncomfortable

Some people may also feel discomfort in the stomach after consuming oregano.

Skin irritation

The use of oregano oil on the skin can also trigger skin irritation. Skin irritation usually appears if oregano oil is applied to the skin in concentrations of more than 1%.
