Matcha vs green tea, which is healthier? That question may have crossed the minds of fans of matcha and green tea. Both do have a delicious aroma and taste.

But, from the point of view of its health benefits, which is better?

Matcha and green tea come from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), but are processed in different ways. Green tea is processed by steaming or roasting raw tea leaves in a short time, then dried for a few days. After that, green tea can be consumed immediately.

In contrast to green tea that is still in the form of leaves, matcha is a green tea powder that has been processed through a milling process. This process makes matcha more fragrant and brighter in color than green tea.

Benefits of Matcha for Health

Matcha is rich in antioxidants polyphenols and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallateI) which can protect body cells from damage due to free radical exposure. Matcha also contains protein, sugar, vitamin A, vitamin C, and various minerals, such as iron, calcium, zinc, and potassium.

Thanks to its antioxidant and nutrient content, matcha is considered to be well consumed for good health. Here are some benefits of matcha for the body:

  • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease
  • Maintain bone strength and health and prevent bone breakdown or osteoporosis
  • Reduces the risk of cancer
  • Calms the mind and reduces stress
  • Maintain dental hygiene and health
  • Improves memory and concentration
  • Helps the process of removing toxins from the body or detoxifying
  • Lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) levels

To experience these benefits, you can consume 2 cups of matcha drink per day. Matcha is generally safe to consume, but if consumed too much can cause some side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite.

Consumption of matcha with certain drugs is also at risk of causing drug interactions or other side effects, such as liver damage.

Benefits of Green Tea for Health

Just like matcha, green tea is also rich in antioxidants. The nutritional content of green tea is also not much different from matcha. Green tea contains various compounds and antioxidant molecules such as polyphenols and catechins (EGCG). It plays an important role in reducing the rate of production of free radical molecules often associated with the aging process and other chronic diseases.

A 2018 study by the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia showed the potential of EGCG in treating cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.Even so, based on a study conducted in 2004 by Zhejiang University showed that low quality green tea products contain high levels of fluoride. 

This is what makes green tea has many health benefits, including:

  • Improves memory and concentration
  • Reduces stress and calms the mind
  • Increases the body’s metabolism
  • Inhibits the growth of cancer cells
  • Preserve brain function and prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease
  • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Keeping blood sugar and cholesterol levels stable
  • Inhibits premature aging of the skin
  • Prevent tooth decay due to bacteria and plaque accumulation

To benefit from this green tea, you can consume 1–3 cups of green tea per day. Meanwhile, pregnant and lactating mothers should only drink 1–2 cups per day. You are also advised to limit the consumption of green tea when taking certain medications.

In fact, both matcha and green tea are both beneficial for health. The only difference between these two drinks is in shape and taste. Green tea is still in the form of leaves, while matcha has been processed into powder.

Other differences are also found in the taste of matcha and green tea. If you prefer a drink with a fresh and bitter aroma, matcha can be an option. Matcha is also popular because it can be drunk with milk or made into smoothies.

However, if you like aromatic drinks with a slightly lighter taste, green tea can be the right choice for you.
