Melatonin is a natural hormone that plays an important role in regulating sleep patterns. With this hormone, you can know when to sleep and stay awake. The hormone melatonin is also made in synthetic form to overcome various sleep disorders.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, the gland in the brain the size of a pea.

At night, the body produces more melatonin to help you fall asleep. During the day, the amount of melatonin produced is less so you stay awake.

In addition to being naturally produced by the body, melatonin is also available in the form of supplements made from synthetic materials or pineal glands in animals.

Benefits of Melatonin to Overcome Sleep Disorders

Melatonin supplements are sometimes taken to help overcome various sleep problems, such as insomnia. However, the use of melatonin supplements to overcome such sleep disorders must of course be in accordance with the prescription and advice of a doctor.

Some types of sleep disorders that are thought to be treated with the use of melatonin supplements are:

1. Delayed sleep-wake phase syndrome (DSWPD)

DSWPD sufferers have difficulty sleeping at night and waking up in the morning. They usually only get to bed at 2–6 am and wake up between 10 am and 1 pm.

DSWPD often makes it difficult for patients to get enough sleep, especially if they have to get up in the morning to work or study. Some research suggests that the use of melatonin supplements may help DSWPD patients to fall asleep earlier.

2. Insomnia

Consumption of melatonin supplements is believed to improve sleep quality and make insomnia sufferers more easily.

A study showed that melatonin supplementation may also improve sleep problems in patients with mental and neurological disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and autism.

3. Jet lag

Jet lag can occur when you travel past several time zones. When you experience jet lag, you will feel unwell, sleeping suit, more often daytime sleepiness, headache, and difficulty concentrating.

To overcome jet lag, one way to do this is to take melatonin supplements. Some research suggests that melatonin supplementation can help relieve jet lag symptoms and improve the quality of sleep of a person with jet lag.

4. Sleep disorders due to shift work

People who work shifts at night often have difficulty sleeping. Some studies show that melatonin supplementation can improve the quality and duration of daytime sleep in people who have to work night shifts.

In addition to overcoming sleep disorders, melatonin supplements are also believed to have many other benefits, including:

  • Relieves pain, for example due to muscle pain and menstruation
  • Lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients
  • Handling anxiety
  • Maintain eye health and function
  • Relieves the symptoms of tinnitus
  • Helps treat stomach disorders

However, keep in mind that the various benefits of melatonin supplements above still need to be further investigated regarding their effectiveness. Therefore, you are advised to consult a doctor first before taking melatonin supplements.
