In one day, there are two periods when the body will feel sleepy naturally, namely late at night (usually between midnight to 7 am) and noon (around 13.00-16.00).
If you are awake (do not sleep) during these hours, the risk of drowsiness during the next morning activity will increase, especially if your sleep time is low.
The cause of drowsiness in the morning maybe because the body is dehydrated, aka lack of fluid intake. Dehydration can reduce blood flow to the brain, making it easier for the body to feel drowsy. In addition, dehydration can cause dry mouth and airways as well as cramps in the legs during sleep. As a result, your sleep quality is disturbed.
- Side effects of drugs
Taking certain medications can also cause drowsiness in the morning. Some drugs that have a drowsy side effect are antipsychotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, blood pressure-lowering drugs, heart medications, thyroid medications, and asthma medications.
Caffeine in coffee, tea, soft drinks or medicines does have many health benefits. However, if consumed before bed, the caffeine enhancement effect can interfere with your sleep quality.
The reason is that caffeine stays in the body for about 6 hours after you consume it.
Consuming alcoholic beverages, even in small amounts, can change the duration of sleep and the quality of sleep as a whole. In certain amounts, alcohol consumed the night before bed can cause a drowsy effect later in the day.
Not only that, alcohol can even make it difficult for a person to concentrate and nausea, especially if consumed in large quantities.
- Sleep disorders
Sleepiness in the morning can also be due to sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, hypersomnia (excessive drowsiness in the morning or during the day even if you have enough sleep at night), or restless legs syndrome. To confirm the diagnosis of one of these conditions, a direct examination of a doctor is required.
