Although common in adults, diabetes can also be experienced by infants. Therefore, recognize the signs of diabetes in infants so that they can be detected and treated immediately.
Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases where it is a big problem in most countries in the world. In Malaysia, a study was conducted in 2011 where it is estimated that more than 3 million Malaysians have diabetes. Diabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar level is higher than normal. It is one of the main factors in getting a heart attack or stroke.
Diabetes occurs when the pancreas in the body no longer produces insulin or the body can not use its own insulin effectively. The food we eat will turn into sugar in our body. Insulin will be used to carry sugar in the bloodstream into cells and tissues, where it will be used to supply energy.
Knowing the signs of diabetes in babies is important to do, especially if you or your partner also suffers from diabetes. The reason is, the baby’s chances of getting diabetes can increase if one of the parents has a history of diabetes.
The most common type of diabetes in infants is type 1 diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs because the body does not produce enough insulin hormone or does not even produce insulin hormone at all. The symptoms usually develop quickly, that is, within a few weeks.
Some signs of diabetes in babies that you can observe are:
1. Weight loss
Babies with diabetes tend to be underweight. Her weight is also difficult to gain despite having enough breast milk or eating a lot. This is the first sign of diabetes in infants.
Diabetes can cause a decrease in the supply of sugar to the body’s cells. As a result, babies with diabetes will look as weak as they lack energy.
3. Frequent vomiting
Signs of diabetes in the next baby are often vomiting for no apparent reason, even for 3-4 days in a row. This condition is caused by an increase in blood sugar levels in his body.
4. Frequent urination and frequent thirst
Frequent urination and frequent thirst can be a sign of diabetes in infants. This is also due to the increase in blood sugar levels in his body.
As the blood sugar level in the body increases, more sugar will be excreted through the kidneys. The sugar will also ‘invite’ water to be excreted by the kidneys through the urine. Due to the amount of fluid wasted, babies will certainly feel thirsty more often.
The next sign of diabetes in the next baby is a fussy baby. This is associated with an increase in blood sugar levels in his body, following all the complaints he feels, such as thirst or nausea.
6. Frequent diaper rash
Although diaper rash does not always indicate that the baby has diabetes, you should be aware that the Little One often suffers from it. This is because babies with diabetes are more likely to have diaper rash due to fungal infections.
If the children show various signs of diabetes in the baby as mentioned above, it is best to check with the pediatrician immediately. The doctor can perform various examinations, including blood tests, to determine the cause. Once the cause is known, the doctor will provide appropriate treatment.
