Stress is a body reaction that occurs when a person faces threats, pressures, or change. Stress can also occur because of situations or thoughts that make a person feel hopeless, nervous, angry, or excited.
The situation will trigger the body’s response, both physically and mentally. The body’s response to stress can be in the form of breathing and heart rate, muscles become stiff, and blood pressure rises. Stress is often triggered by inner stress, such as family problems, social relationships, heartbreak, unrequited love, or financial problems. In addition, stress can also be triggered by the disease suffered. Having family members who are prone to stress will also make that person more prone to stress.
Everyone, including children, has experienced stress. These conditions do not always have adverse effects and are generally only temporary. Stress will end when the condition that causes the stress or frustration is passed.
Prolonged stress can interfere with physical health and weaken the body. In addition, stress can also cause disorders of the digestive system and the reproductive system. People who experience prolonged stress will usually also experience sleep disorders.
The symptoms that occur when a person is stressed can vary, depending on the cause and how to treat it. Symptoms or signs of stress can be distinguished into:
Emotional symptoms, such as irritability, frustration, mood swings or moody, difficulty in calming the mind, inferiority, and feeling lonely, useless, confused, and out of control, to the point of looking confused, avoiding others, and depression.
Physical symptoms, such as drowning, dizziness, migraine, tense headaches, digestive disorders (nausea and diarrhea or constipation), muscle aches, palpitations, frequent colds, sleep disturbances, decreased sexual desire, trembling body, buzzing ears, numbness cold and sweaty, or dry mouth and difficulty swallowing. Stress in women can also cause complaints or menstrual disorders.
Cognitive symptoms, for example, are often forgotten, difficult to concentrate, pessimistic, have negative views, and make poor decisions.
Behavioral symptoms, such as not wanting to eat, avoiding responsibilities, as well as showing nervousness such as biting nails or walking back and forth, smoking, and consuming excessive alcohol.
- Causes of Stress
When a person faces stress-inducing conditions, the body reacts naturally, namely by releasing hormones called cortisol and adrenaline. This reaction is actually good to help someone face a dangerous or threatening situation, so that they can get out of the situation.
There are various situations or events that can trigger stress, including being jobless, having too much workload, about to undergo a job interview, worried about not being able to take care of children, arguing with a partner, bad relationship with superiors, becoming a victim of harassment, getting married or divorced, expelled from home, undergoing the judicial process, suffering from a disease that is severe or difficult to cure.
Stress is hard to avoid. So, the most important thing is how to deal with stress, because when stress occurs prolonged, it can cause health problems.
