Organic ingredients are always said to be healthier than food grown with non-organic agriculture and livestock. The main differences between organic and non-organic food can be seen in the way farmers and breeders process the vegetables, fruits, grains, and meats that will be sold for consumption. Organic farmers and breeders do not use synthetic substances such as pesticides and fertilizers on their plants, or antibiotic injections on animals they care for.
Some people start to choose to buy organic foods instead of those grown by conventional methods for a number of reasons, including:
- Organic foods are claimed to contain no pesticides
Conventional farmers generally use synthetic pesticides to protect vegetables and fruits from fungi, pests, and insects. These pesticides will continue to leave residues that stick to vegetables and fruits so they are at risk for humans consuming them. In contrast to conventional farmers, organic farmers use natural predators or insect traps to eradicate pests and insects. However, if there is pesticide use on organic or non-organic ingredients, it generally does not exceed the rate recommended by the government.
– Plants are not grown with pesticides including herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sludge, biotechnology, or ion radiation.
– Meat can be labeled organic if reared animals are given organic feed and are not given antibiotics and growth hormones. These animals should also have ample access to open areas such as grass in the open field.
- Organic foods are claimed to contain no additives
Supplements referred to herein are preservatives, artificial sweeteners, monosodium glutamate (MSG), or dyes and flavors.
- Organic ingredients are claimed to be more eco-friendly
Organic farming aims to maintain water and soil sustainability by reducing the pollution of synthetic pesticides.
- Organic food tastes better
This could be because organic farming generally cultivates a limited number of crops and sells them directly to the nearest market. Fresh food tastes better.
However, you may be wondering, does organic food really bring health benefits? There is no definitive answer to this as there is very little evidence to suggest that consuming organic food actually has more health benefits than conventional foods.
While there are many benefits, there are some consequences you should take when consuming organic foods, including:
- Organic food prices are higher than conventional food because organic farming and livestock require special treatment methods.
- Organic ingredients break down faster because they contain no preservatives.
- Because they do not use pesticides and other ingredients, the appearance and appearance of organic foods may not be as attractive as conventional foods. The color is probably not very bright, the size is not very large, or there are holes in the vegetable or fruit.
- Synthetic pesticides are not the only things that threaten the health of the food as there are also natural pesticides used as organic pesticides to protect crops. Solanin is one example. If swallowed, this potato-producing material can cause irritation.
The above consequences do not mean that the quality of organic food can be lower than that of non-organic foods, because the standard of food security must be applied.
