Although sweet drinks taste good, it can be harmful to health, especially if consumed too much. Find out what harmful beverages are to your health so that you don’t overdo it. Sweet drinks are the types of drinks that sweeteners have provided, such as liquid sugar, brown sugar, syrup, honey, fruit concentrate, and artificial sweeteners.

Some of the most popular examples of sweet drinks are soda, fruit juices, packaged drinks, and boba drinks. In addition to high sugar, sweet drinks do not contain many nutrients that are beneficial to the body.

In fact, pure fruit juice that is said to be healthy because it contains a lot of vitamins is actually less healthy than whole fruit. This is because the fiber content in fruit juice is very low while its sugar content is high.

Excessive sugar consumption is associated with an increase in weight and the appearance of various diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

You should know the dangers of sweet drinks and what it does to the body. Studies show that consumption of 2–6 cups of sugary drinks per week can increase the risk of death by 6%, and consumption of 1–2 cups of sweet drinks per day can increase the risk of death by 14%. The dangers of sweet drinks to health cannot be underestimated. Here are some illnesses that can occur as a result of consuming too many sugary drinks:

  • Obesity

Weight gain occurs when the number of calories entered is greater than the number of calories burned for activity. Well, high sugar content in sweet drinks will give you a high-calorie intake.

In contrast to solid foods, sweet drinks do not give you fullness, so you will still consume large quantities of foods even when you are consuming a lot of calories from sugary drinks. As a result, calorie intake exceeds your body’s needs and results in weight gain.

Uncontrolled weight gain can lead to overweight and obesity. Obesity is a risk factor for various deadly diseases, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Therefore, increase the consumption of sugary drinks to prevent obesity while reducing the risk of death from these diseases.

  • Diabetes

High sugar content in sugary drinks can increase your blood sugar levels and increase your risk of diabetes. Diabetes can cause complications in the kidneys, eyes, and heart. A study shows that consuming 1–2 cups of sweet drinks daily can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 26%.

  • High cholesterol and heart disease

There are two types of cholesterol, namely good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein / HDL) and bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein / LDL). People who regularly consume sugary drinks tend to have lower HDL and higher LDL levels. High LDL levels can increase your risk of developing cardiac arrest. A study says that consuming one can of sweet drinks per day increases the risk of a heart attack by 20%.

  • Dental damage

Consumption of foods or sugary drinks can cause tooth decay. To avoid this, sweet drinks are only recommended for consumption at mealtime. The same applies to fruit juices because the sugar and acid content in it can damage the teeth. Therefore, fruit juice should only be consumed during the main meal and the amount should also be restricted. The recommended amount of pure fruit juice is 150 ml per day.

  • Certain types of cancer

A study suggests that excessive consumption of sugary drinks can increase the risk of developing cancers in general, except for lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. The type of cancer that is closely linked to the consumption of sugary drinks is breast cancer.

Excessive consumption of pure fruit juice can also increase the risk of cancer. Therefore, consumption of whole fruit is much more recommended than the consumption of fruit juice alone.

To avoid the dangers of sweet drinks, you need to limit their consumption. In lieu of sweet drinks, you can choose white or carbonated water that does not contain sweeteners. You can also consume low-calorie soda drinks with less sugar content.
