Yoga is an exercise that is associated with slow and controlled movements that can train the entire body. This exercise emphasizes the control of the body’s core, abdomen, waist, and spine. It also plays an important role in controlling your breathing especially when you are exercising with various movements.

Through yoga exercises, you can get benefits like increasing your body flexibility, building the muscles in the core and increasing the body balance

It is able to reduce the joint pain in the shoulder, neck and waist. Slow and gentle exercise movement also makes it a practice for women including pregnant women.

Although the yoga exercises seem to be casual, they require high focus. This is to ensure that every movement is done well and won’t hurt your body. Yoga exercises are also beneficial in terms of establishing proper posture. It is amazing how yoga practitioners can feel the aura of relaxation and thus reduce the stress of doing the activity.

According to research, the benefits of yoga are both physical and mental. Yoga causes pain in chronic conditions of fibromyalgia, according to a study published in October 2010 in Pain magazine.

The practice of yoga is just as effective as a treatment for patients with conditions. Yoga at work can relieve back pain and stress, and it can also reduce inflammation, immune response that can contribute to heart disease and other chronic conditions.

A review of 16 studies on the benefits of yoga mental health, published in January 2013, found that yoga exercises can help improve symptoms for people with depression. The same study also found that yoga can alleviate sleep problems, even without sleeping pills.

However, like exercise, yoga can pose risks too. Wrong practice of yoga can be dangerous and can have a detrimental effect on your health.

Followings are some side effects from yoga:

  • It worsens the muscle and causes intense pain and internal bleeding. Some yoga styles can even cause fractures or delicate bone fractures. Especially f you have thin or fragile bones.
  • These fractures can take months to heal and may sometimes require surgical intervention. Some styles of yoga can also cause gastric problems in some individuals.
  • Most people complain of gastric symptoms associated with hatha yoga postures. This is true, especially if you do not do all the yoga asanas in a certain order.

Some styles of yoga are so complicated that experts do not understand and know how to practice them properly.

For instance; yoga kundalini. If it is done wrongly, it can have a detrimental effect on you mentally. This is known as kundalini syndrome.

Possible side effects of kundalini syndrome are pseudo death, psychosis, pseudo psychosis, confusion, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, sadness, suicidal thoughts, urge to self-harm, suicide urges, arrhythmia (heart failure) current, insomnia, inability to hold on to work, inability to talk, inability to drive, sexual pain, temporary blindness, and headache.

Even if you practice yoga under the supervision of a teacher, it is possible that your teacher is not fully aware of the technique and may give the wrong instruction. Therefore, you should be very careful if you are also considering trying these advanced forms of yoga.

People who have a hernia disc or osteoporosis, for example, should avoid headaches, and anyone with neck problems should avoid headstands.
Talk to your doctor about specific issues before starting a recommended practice, such as letting your yoga teacher know of any restrictions such as:

  • Neck, back, or spine injuries
  • Heart disease
  • History of stroke or bleeding disorders
  • Eye problems, such as glaucoma or isolated retina
  • Hernia hiatus
  • 40 years old and above
