Anxiety is a feeling of fear or worries. Anxiety can happen for no reason, or it may happen based on the actual situation, but it may be out of proportion to what is usually expected. Severe anxiety can have serious effects on daily life.

In the West, about 10 percent of the population is affected by anxiety disorders. Only eight percent of the victims are middle-Easterners and six percent of Asians are reported to have problems with anxiety. It usually begins in childhood or adolescence, but can begin in adulthood. It is more common in women than in men.

Then, have you ever felt like you were worrying without any reason? Have you ever had a rapid heartbeat and this has caused you panic, restlessness, and fear of uncertainty?

According to WebMD’s health portal, when a person suffers anxiety, the individual may experience the following:

General anxiety disorder (GAD): People with GAD tend to worry too much about health, finances, family, or work even when there is no reason to do so.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Individuals with OCD cannot control their thoughts. It also interferes with one’s life due to excessive obsession and repeated compulsive behavior.

Panic disorder with agoraphobia: Panic attacks (defined as sudden panic attacks, shortness of breath, heart pounding and fear of loss of control or feeling insane) can occur at any time and can take about 10 to 20 minutes every time it attacks.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): This condition often affects those suffering from extreme trauma as a result of war, natural disasters, and attacks.

Social phobia (or social anxiety disorder): This social phobia is classified as extreme anxiety and self-awareness in every social situation.

Women are more likely to have anxiety disorders than men

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have found that women are more likely to be attacked with anxiety than men. Although the cause is unclear, researchers believe it may be due to differences in brain chemistry between the two genders.

Other risk factors include low socioeconomic strata, middle-aged people, those experiencing negative life experiences such as failure in relationships or miscarriage, job loss or illness, and the loss of loved ones.

In situations like these, anxiety will occur naturally and are found to affect women more.

The study also explained that individuals who suffer from the early stages of anxiety disorders do not affect normal life.

These anxiety disorders are just like any other mental health problem, caused by a variety of reasons. It includes changes in pressure around the brain, and genetics. These disorders can occur in families and be traced to a person’s DNA.

If you feel you have severe anxiety disorders, seek the help of an expert right away. Certain medications or treatments like meditation can help you control this problem.

Treatment for anxiety disorders

When the cause of anxiety is a physical illness, the treatment is directed toward eliminating the disease. For example, if your thyroid gland is contracting and causing anxiety, treatment may involve surgery and a variety of thyroid-regulating medications.

Prescription antidepressants. Anxiety medication treatment is available and may be very useful for people with anxiety that interferes with their daily lives. The most common anxiety medication used to treat anxiety is from a class of drugs namely benzodiazepines. These anxiety treatment medications are sometimes referred to as “tranquilizers,” as they make you feel at ease and relaxed.
