The process of aging refers to the process by which an individual’s age increases. It is a process that continues until death. Aging is associated with the shifts in psychological, behavioral, dynamic biological and social processes as well.
Biologically, aging is a process whereby the cells in our body stop growing. The process of aging for humans involves the accumulation of changes in body cells that accumulate each year. Changes in these cells usually will affect the function of these cells.
As a result, these cells will not function at optimal levels and the lifespan of the cells will be shortened. The aging rate varies from one another because each individual has different lifestyles and genetic factors.
Early aging usually refers to the earlier process of aging compared to healthy individuals.
The main cause of premature aging is usually due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Its characteristics are pretty much the same as normal aging except that they begin at a younger age. Early aging may also be due to rare progeria diseases such as Hutchison-Gilford syndrome and Werner syndrome.
Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is a rare disorder of childhood characterized by premature aging. Similarly, Werner syndrome is characterized by the appearance of unusually accelerated aging (progeria).
Sign of aging
There are various signs of aging but impaired functioning of organs during the aging process usually does not affect the ability of elders to carry out daily activities. Generally, older people will get to detect impaired functioning of their bodies when they are engaged in heavy physical activities or when they have diseases.
Our heart’s function decreases as our age increases. Therefore, the heart of an elderly person is less capable of pumping blood than the heart of a young person.
Every organ in our body undergoes different aging processes. For example, our body’s metabolic rate will start to decline after the age of 20. On the contrary, our hearing will only decline after we turn 50. The physical signs of aging usually start in the 30s.
Some of the most common physical signs of aging are:
- Excessive fatigue especially after conducting physical activities
- Bones are more fragile and weaker than young people
- Tighter joints
- Hair turns into gray
- Limited and slower body movements
- Declines in remembering and ability to concentrate, impaired hearing, blurred vision
- Loss of body muscles and weight loss
- Injuries will take longer to recover
- Menopause (for women), the emergence of diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes
Aging is an inevitable process but it can be slowed down. If the process of aging is delayed, the lifespan of an individual will improve and the quality of life will be better than that of those who experience early aging.
Therefore, everyone should understand the factors that influence the aging process so that effective steps can be taken to slow down the risk of aging.
One of the major factors that accelerates the aging process is unhealthy nutrition. High consumption of carbohydrates and sugar will speed up the aging process. According to studies, low carbohydrate and sugar intake are effective in slowing down the process of aging and prolonging life.
Other than that, excessive intake of oil, fats, salt and processed foods will also speed up the aging process as they can affect the ability of cells in our body to repair damage and generate new cells.
Lack of physical activity also accelerates the aging process. If one does not exercise regularly, the organs in the body will not be able to function properly and decline at a faster rate.
Lack of quality will also accelerate the aging process. According to a study, those who live longer usually sleep 6 to 7 hours a night. Sleeping less than 5 hours or more than 9 hours daily will drastically shorten the age as these groups are at risk to get cardiovascular disease.
How do we take care of our health when we get older?
Practicing a healthy lifestyle is highly recommended to slow down the aging process and prevent “old diseases” such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
It is advisable to consume more food that will prevent premature aging include food that contains low carbohydrates, fats and salt content. Regular exercise is also important to slow down the aging process.
