There is a saying that “One apple a day can keep you away from your doctor,” but what about two apples a day? What are the benefits of taking the fruit?

If you used to eat one apple a day, maybe later you could start taking two apples per day. Why? This is because there is research that says two apples consumed daily can help maintain cholesterol levels.

More interestingly, researchers also claim that individuals who take two apples a day for eight weeks can reduce their cholesterol levels by up to 4%. This condition can also reduce the risk of a stroke or heart attack caused by the hardening of cholesterol in the artery.

In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, respondents aged between 20 and 69 were asked to take two apples a day for two months.

Blood pressure levels were taken by the researchers before and after the study period. The researchers also compared the results of the study with individuals who consumed two glasses of apple juice with the same caloric content over the two months of the study.

From the results of the study, people who ate apples had an average of 3.6% lower cholesterol levels compared to those who consumed apple-based beverages. The percentage is much lower than statin, which is a drug commonly used to reduce cholesterol between 30% and 55%.

But these small dietary changes are believed to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, the results of this study also found that female individuals who consumed two apples daily received more cholesterol-related benefits than men.

While it is said that women benefit more, it does not mean that there is no direct benefit to men, does it? However, there is still a lot of research to be done to confirm this.

What’s the benefit?

Before talking about its benefits, have you ever wondered why apples are the best option? This is because apples are a fruit that contains high fiber content and water – two qualities that make you full.

Two large apples, containing about one-fourth of the daily fiber recommended for an individual and contain a type of fiber that supports the development of good bacteria, thus reducing cholesterol. So that’s why there’s a saying, “One apple a day can keep you away from your doctor.”

Researchers also found that individuals who take this daily diet will also have healthier and calmer blood vessels.

The effect of this condition is similar to the consumption of other foods containing natural compounds called polyphenols.

To your knowledge, polyphenols are the phytochemical compounds that are naturally present in plants. These compounds provide a variety of pigments in foods.

Not only that, polyphenols also work to protect plants from harm.

According to senior author of the study from the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition at the University of Reading, Professor Julie Lovegrove said, “It seems that the old saying often referred to this fruit is almost correct.”

Individuals who eat two large apples daily with high polyphenol content will have lower LDL cholesterol levels and no better cholesterol reduction than those who take apple-based beverages.
