With lockdowns happening worldwide, its almost impossible not to develop a sedentary lifestyle. Being confined at home, locked away from the outside world, no socializing without using social media, all this will have a toll on us.
According to studies, a sedentary lifestyle will eventually lead to:
- type 2 diabetes
- some types of cancer
- cardiovascular disease
- early death
These reactions are due to lowered metabolism from inactivity for the period of time. It also leads to problems of the body’s ability to control blood sugar levels, regulate blood pressure, and break down fat.
A study based on 15 years of inactivity revealed that it led to an early death, regardless of how high one’s physical activity level was. It goes to show the true importance of exercise.
Being under lockdown prevents one from going out and talking to a person face to face.
Social interaction is crucial for everyone. Without it, people will feel lonely and depressed. Socializing online is good but the best is still taking face to face, as the message one wants to convey is clearer.
What can we do?
Home workouts are the first thing we need to prioritize during these hard times. Not only does this keep you healthy, but it helps you get more muscular, something everyone wants deep down.
The second thing to do is to socialize with your friends when you can. Its very easy for one to feel lonely and sad, so talk to them on the phone or on social media.
Lastly, limit your screen time. With the lockdown at hand, it’s easy to just stare at a screen for endless hours and ruin your eyesight. Walk around, do some stretches, cook food, clean up, anything to get you from being stuck to a chair or sofa.
