Eyesight, one of the most used sense in the human body. The thought of going blind is unbearable to most of us which is why I’ll go through with you on how to keep your eyesight.


  1. Take proper vitamins and minerals

Vitamins like A, C, and E prevents degeneration of your eyesight along with minerals like zinc that has antioxidants. The macula, the part of the eye that controls central vision deteriorates over time, so getting enough of these nutrients are crucial.

Food rich in these nutrients are:

  • carrots
  • red peppers
  • broccoli
  • spinach
  • strawberries
  • sweet potato
  • citrus

Foods like salmon and flaxseed are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, good for eye health as well


  1. Carotenoids

Foods like leafy vegetables, broccoli, zucchini, and eggs have lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that protects the macula. Also, it improves pigment density and its ability to take in ultraviolet and blue light.


  1. Manage chronic conditions

Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis can affect your eyesight. These conditions could cause inflammation in the optic nerve, which eventually will blind you.

These conditions must be regulated properly through proper medication and exercise.


  1. Protection

It’s important to protect your eyes when its very sunny outside. Sunglasses is an excellent solution, second would be wearing a cap.


  1. The 20-20-20 rule

The 20-20-20 rule requires that for every 20 minutes, you need to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.


  1. Quit smoking

Smoking affects your eyes in the sense that it increases your risk of developing cataracts and ages your macula. The solution? Quit smoking.


  1. Keep your hands and lenses clean

Common sense. You need to make sure that your hands are clean because we tend touch our eyes without noticing. Contact lenses needs to placed in saline solution frequently as it collects germs throughout the day.
