Food is not the only factor you need to take care of if you want to stay healthy.
Drinks also play an important role in contributing to one’s health overall.
There is a small population who choose to consume vegan milk, to produce a healthy lifestyle but does it mean it is healthier than cow’s milk?
Why not drink cow’s milk?
For thousands of years, cow’s milk has been a frequent source of protein for people, worldwide. It enhances the body’s immunity due to its protein-rich content such as antibodies.
A study conducted by Loss in 2015 found that babies who consumed cow’s milk had a lower risk of fever and lower respiratory tract infections. If it is capable of providing many benefits to the health of the individual as a whole, why do so many choose to take milk made from plants such as soybeans, almonds, coconuts and rice?
Here are some reasons often associated with choosing vegan milk over cow’s milk:
– Most cow’s milk contains pathogens that can cause food poisoning. If it is left untreated, bacteria (Salmonella and Escherichia coli) can spread and cause-related diseases
– Most infants and children are at risk of developing allergic effects from cow’s milk intake. However, a large-scale study of Gray in 2014 found that 35% of the child population was able to retrieve cow milk at the age of 5 years and above
– Lactose intolerance is an issue often associated with cow’s milk intake. Lactose is rich in lactose so individuals who do not have lactase enzymes will experience symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps
– A study conducted in 2007 by Qin and a 2013 study by Song found that regular intake of milk could increase the risk of developing prostate cancer
Other milk does not have enough calories or a lack of nutrients to replace cow’s milk. However, further studies need to be conducted to see the effect of this alternative milk processing the taste, texture and nutrition of the milk.
Vegan milk is not necessarily healthier than cow’s milk
According to Dr Alexis Willet, a science writer with a doctorate in biomedical science, cow’s milk is not necessarily healthier than vegan milk. Although vegan milk is usually made from healthy ingredients like legumes, the majority of the ingredients used are water with a bean content of only 2.5%.
This means that, compared to cow’s milk, it has much lower calorie, protein and fat content than cow’s milk.
In fact, soy milk is seen as an ideal alternative containing only 8g of protein in a 240ml glass of milk compared to cow’s milk containing 8.4g of protein. Other milk does not have enough calories or lack of nutrients to replace cow’s milk.
In addition, vegan milk is often supplemented with supplements such as B, D and calcium which make it difficult to absorb into the body.
Compared to vegan milk with an absorption rate of between 20% and 30%, cow’s milk has a minimum absorption rate of 30%.
However, further studies need to be conducted to see the effect of this alternative milk processing on the taste, texture and nutrition of the milk.
